Andrea’s Voice

One of the most important voices in the development of True North Living was Andrea.

Andrea has spent approximately ten years living in group-home and residential settings. Her experiences gave her a perspective that cannot be learned from a textbook, regulation, policy manual, or business plan.

She knew what it felt like to live with constantly changing caregivers. She understood how the personalities and dynamics of the people living together could affect the entire home. And she knew that having too many people sharing one residence could make it difficult for individuals to have privacy, stability, and meaningful relationships.

When asked what she believed would make a better home, Andrea helped shape the operational model for True North Living.

Her recommendations were straightforward:

  • Keep the home small. No more than three residents whenever possible.
  • Consider compatibility when choosing housemates. A successful home is about more than simply filling an available bed.
  • Create consistency among caregivers. True North Living intends to use a staffing model designed to reduce unnecessary caregiver turnover and the confusion that can come from having too many different people moving in and out of a resident’s home.

Those ideas became part of the foundation of True North Living.

Because we believe one of the people who understands residential services best is often the person who has actually lived in them.
